Intensive Grass Workshop

The Chico Basin Ranch is offering an in depth, grass identification workshop on the ranch to people interested in learning more about native grasses and forbs.  The students in the class will learn to sight-identify the major general of grasses at Chico Basin Ranch, plus they will learn how to use a dichotomous key to identify grasses to the species level.  Some time will also be spent studying grass family groups, individual species characteristics and needs, soil types, life zones and the impact of wildlife and livestock grazing.
 
·         Dates:  July 15, 16, 2008
·         Instructor: Alan Carpenter.
·         Where: Chico Basin Ranch.  The Chico is an 87,000 acre cattle ranch owned by the Colorado State Land Board and managed by Duke and Janet Phillips.  It is located 40 minutes south east of Colorado Springs.
·         Attendance: people can sign up for either one or two days; preference will be given to students attending for two days.
·         Cost: $75 per day per person, two days $135 per person.
·         Meals: three meals per day will be provided at $35 per day, or $15 per meal.
·         Lodging:  bunk room accommodations will be available for $30 per person per night.
·         Camping: primitive camp sites are available for $15 per person per night.
·         Space: limited to 16 students.
 
Proceeds from the workshop will be donated to Ranchlands Learning and Research Center (RLRC), Chico Basin Ranch’s education and research arm.  RLRC funds and manages education and research projects on the ranch such as the bird banding station in the spring and fall on the Chico, and year round education programs for adults and K-12 school children that provide introductory level curriculum to grazing management and ranch management programs that use cattle as a tool to achieve conservation goals, grazing planning, wildlife management, ecosystems management, horsemanship, livestock handling and our ranching heritage.
 
To make reservations, please call 719.683.7960.  A deposit of $50 will hold your place.  Refunds will be made only for cancellations made 7 days or longer in advance.  Non refunded deposits can be applied toward future workshops
