hico Basin is dedicated to the enhancement and preservation of the natural world and our western heritage. We believe that ranchers play an important role in the stewardship of our nation’s native rangelands because we live on the land and our families’ futures depend on our ability to build and maintain the health of the ecosystem on our properties. As an ongoing family ranching operation in an increasingly competitive and changing world, Chico Basin Ranch is working on a daily basis to find financially viable ranching and land management practices that help sustain our western heritage. Our business practices combine traditional methods with innovative ideas. In doing so, we work collaboratively with neighboring ranches and with groups inside and outside our traditional ranching circles.
We take seriously our responsibilities as stewards of this great public resource and consider it an honor to be entrusted with this charge. We see education as an important part of our mission of providing learning opportunities to people interested in ranching and its important role in ecological preservation. The Chico annually welcomes over three thousand people to the ranch to participate in our education programs that focus on our ranching legacy, the ranch’s natural ecology, and the important role that ranching plays in the maintenance of our nation’s vital natural resources.
We also believe in continuing education for ourselves. Our management philosophy requires us to constantly assess how our conservation efforts and business enterprises interact, and challenges us to learn from the results and improve upon our model. The ever-changing variables affecting our business – climate, cattle markets, the global economy, and others—mean that our traditional methods can inform new solutions, but also must adapt to new situations as we move into the 21st century.
